Hoodia gordonii is pronounced "HOO-dee-ah". Hoodia Gordonii has different names - khoba, hoodia, xhooba, hoodia cactus, Ghaap and South African desert cactus. Botanically Hoodia is a cactus. It's so famous because of its ability to suppress appetite. Stories about Hoodia were done by 60 Minutes, ABC, and the BBC.
Hoodia gordonii grows in the semi-deserts of South Africa, Angola, Botswana, and Namibia. Hoodia is actually a succulent, not a cactus. It grows in clumps of green upright stems.
The cactus can be harvested after about 5 years, when hoodia's flowers appear. There are twenty types of hoodia, but only the hoodia gordonii variety contains the natural appetite suppressant.
Although Hoodia was discovered as a weight loss supplement recently, the San Bushmen from the Kalahari desert have been eating hoodia for years. The Bushmen used hoodia in long exhausting hunting trips to ward off hunger and thirst.
Scientists began studying Hoodia only in 1963. Initial results of South Africa's national laboratory research were promising - laboratory animals lost weight with hoodia.
After the first results obtained, the South African scientists together with a British company named Phytopharm, decided to isolate the active ingredient in hoodia. It is a steroidal glycoside, and they called it p57. After getting a patent in 1995, p57 was licansed to Phytopharm. Phytopharm has spent more than $20 million dollars researching hoodia.
